The patient HAND WIPE is:

  • A cloth Wipe
  • Consists of 64% alcohol

The Studies
  • A study documenting the sanitary benefits of paper placemats was conducted by the Food Protection Laboratory of the Syracuse Research Corporation.  
  • Then a follow up was conducted by UW Environmental Studies finding similar results.  
  • That study expanded on the initial study to include new groups of facilities including Hospitals and Long Term Care facilities and evaluated microbial loads on tray covers and placemats versus uncovered tables and trays.  
  • A third study conducted by UW Oshkosh Microbiology professor Greg Kleinheinz, R.S., Ph.D. and UW Oshkosh Microbiology students reexamined the benefits of using disposable paper placemats or tray covers to reduce the amount of bacteria contacted while eating at certain types of facilities.  Again, the study showed similar results.  Results from these studies demonstrated that tray covers and placemats help in the reduction of bacterial transfer from tabletops and trays.  
  • Given the relatively low cost of these paper products they could be a value-added public health benefit to these facilities. 
  •  The benefits of using placemats or traycovers far outweigh any additional costs to the facility.
